- This was a warm-up show for the Unity Fest in Texas, to commerorate the life of Brian
Deneke. Watt's backup band this time is The Pair of Pliers Gang: Tom Watson and Bob Lee.
The performance is quite spirited, as are most of the shows since he's recovered from his
illness. Not surprisingly though, this is a little shorter than the shows that he's been
playing for the last couple of years. Nonetheless, this is a fun show to listen to. Many
of the standards of the last couple of years are here, such as Little Johnny Jewel, but
there are some songs here that Watt hasn't played in quite a while, such as I Felt Like A
Gringo (one of my favourites, sung by Tom Watson), and Little Man With A Gun In His Hand.
Bob lee sings Song For Igor and Joe McCarthy's Ghost, and scats on Life Stinks, where
Vince Meghrouni's sax would normally be. All I can say is that it's a shame that Bob Lee
didn't regularly sing when he was touring with Watt in 1998, since he is a phenomenal
singer (on top of being a phenomenal drummer). Unfortunately, the Life Stinks-Funhouse
part of the encore doesn't work as well as it normally does with sax, but this in no way
detracts from the show. [Contributed by Erinn Cunningham (EC)]

us all with a very enjoyable glimpse of Watt and The Black Gang (Nels Cline and Bob Lee)
having a good romp through The Stooges' classic. (EC)

- Another fabulous mid-tour show from Watt And The Pair of Pliers. I was at this one, and
am the person who had the foresight to bring along a Sony Digital 8 camcorder and Sharp MD
recorder to preserve this concert for the ages. This is definitely one of the best gigs I
ever went to. There was generally a high level of energy, both onstage, and in the
audience. Although there are a couple of very minor clams the band played this show pretty
tight. The Minutemen numbers in particular sound out in this show. Tom reprises his vocals
on The Glory Of Man (which almost sounds like it was written for him). Vince sings a
really powerful I Felt Like A Gringo, which is for me, probably the best Minutemen song
from this show. Also of particular note was an enjoyable pair of Urinals songs: Ack Ack
Ack, and Surfin' With The Shah. Older watt fans and Minutemen fanatics may recognize
Surfin' With The Shah from the early Minutemen shows, and of course, Ack Ack Ack from Three-Way
Tie For Last. TV Eye turned out to be a bit of a surprise. The club started playing
music after the first encore, and people started to get ready to go, when out of the blue,
the band came back on stage to play it, and even dared to be slightly theatric, slightly
mocking the movements of 1970s hard rock bands (without mocking the god-like Stooges, of
course). Final element of note is that Vince plays two really good drums solos on Get
Gettin' Down Down and Surfin' With The Shah.
The video I shot is of reasonable quality.
Although I started shooting with a tripod, I ended up standing on a chair and held the
camera in my hands, to get a better view. Unfortunately I had to use the night shot
setting to get adequate lighting which meant desaturating the colour and giving it a
greenish hue. Beyond that, it is pretty good picture quality, and the audio turned out
well, by video standards. I would rate the picture an A-, and the sound for the video a B.
Props to Paul Williamson for filming the beginning and the encores while I gave my back a
well-deserved rest (if you're going to film on a chair, make sure it's stable!). (EC)
